Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway Nears Completion: CM Fadnavis Likely to Inaugurate Final Stretch in March

Motorists will soon have seamless access to the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway from Bhiwandi, as the 76-km stretch between Igatpuri and Amane is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

Mumbai, February 18, 2025: Motorists will soon have seamless access to the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway from Bhiwandi, as the 76-km stretch between Igatpuri and Amane is expected to be completed by the end of this month. According to officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is likely to inaugurate this final stretch in March.

The expressway, officially named the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, spans 701 km and has been opened in phases since December 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first 520-km stretch between Nagpur and Shirdi. Subsequently, in May 2023, then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the 105-km section from Shirdi to Bharvir, followed by the 25-km stretch from Bharvir to Igatpuri in March 2024.

The final lane-marking and painting work on the Igatpuri-Amane stretch is currently underway and is expected to be completed between February 25 and 27. This section connects with the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway at Amane, linking Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Gujarat. A temporary arrangement has been made to facilitate movement between the Mumbai-Nashik Highway and the Samruddhi Expressway.

First announced in November 2015, construction of the access-controlled greenfield expressway began in February 2019, divided into 16 construction packages. The expressway has generated ₹1,226 crore in toll revenue over the past three years, with toll collection authorized for 40 years.

Despite its significance, motorists have expressed concerns over the lack of wayside amenities such as food courts and rest stops, making long journeys challenging. Authorities are urged to address these issues to ensure safer and more comfortable travel.

Currently operational from Igatpuri to Nagpur (625 km), the expressway’s final 76-km stretch was initially planned for a November-December 2024 launch but faced delays due to government formation and portfolio allocation issues. The MSRDC opted to complete all pending work and open the entire stretch at once. The inaugural event will depend on the availability of CM Fadnavis, Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar.
