The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta, the MLA from Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency, as the next Chief Minister of the national capital.

Verma, in his first reaction to Gupta’s appointment as CM, expressed his happiness, stating, “It is a matter of happiness.”

Kejriwal’s Defeat and BJP’s Resurgence

Kejriwal, who had won the New Delhi seat in 2013, 2015, and 2020, lost to Verma by a margin of 4,089 votes. Verma, aged 47, secured 30,088 votes, while Kejriwal and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit garnered 25,999 and 4,568 votes, respectively.

Parvesh Verma, a two-time Member of Parliament (MP) from West Delhi, ran a highly spirited campaign in New Delhi, even before the BJP officially announced his candidature. His victory marks a significant moment for the party, which has now come to power in Delhi after a 26-year gap.

Parvesh Verma’s Political Journey

Verma was first elected as an MLA from the Mehrauli seat in the 2013 Assembly polls. He later transitioned to national politics, contesting and winning the Lok Sabha elections from the West Delhi seat in 2015. He repeated his success in 2019, securing a landslide victory with a margin of over 4.78 lakh votes.

Race for the Top Post

Apart from Rekha Gupta and Parvesh Verma, several senior BJP leaders, including former Delhi BJP presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay, as well as Pawan Sharma, Ashish Sood, and Shikha Rai, were in contention for the top posts in Delhi’s political landscape.

The BJP’s return to power in Delhi marks the end of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) dominance, which had been in place since 2013. The February 5 Assembly elections saw a decisive shift in the city’s political dynamics, setting the stage for new leadership under Rekha Gupta and Parvesh Verma.
