Delhi’s New CM Announcement: Suspense Continues as BJP Deliberates on Chief Minister Choice

The uncertainty surrounding the new Chief Minister of Delhi persists, nearly ten days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections.

The uncertainty surrounding the new Chief Minister of Delhi persists, nearly ten days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections. BJP MLAs are set to meet on February 19, with the official announcement of the new CM expected to follow shortly. The swearing-in ceremony for the new Delhi CM will take place on February 20 at 4:30 pm, as reported by ANI.

In the midst of this delay, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken aim at the BJP, accusing the party of failing to announce a Chief Minister and cabinet in a timely manner. AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized the BJP’s indecision, stating, “It is clear the BJP has no CM candidate. It’s evident that PM Modi lacks faith in the 48 elected BJP MLAs in Delhi.”

How is Delhi’s CM Chosen?

Typically, the BJP appoints party observers from its central leadership to meet with newly elected MLAs. These observers gather feedback, which is then relayed to the leadership, guiding the final decision on who will become the Chief Minister.

Top Contenders for Delhi CM

Several names are in the running for the position of Delhi’s next Chief Minister. Some of the top candidates include Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat, as well as Rekha Gupta (Shalimar Bagh), Vijender Gupta (Rohini), Satish Upadhyay (Malviya Nagar), Ashish Sood (Janakpuri), Pawan Sharma (Uttam Nagar), and Ajay Mahawar (Ghonda).

BJP’s Dominant Victory in 2025 Delhi Elections

The BJP emerged victorious in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats, leaving AAP with a significantly reduced tally of 22 seats. This shift in power marked a dramatic conclusion to the contest between the BJP and AAP, which had governed Delhi for two consecutive terms.

BJP’s Internal Struggles Exposed

The delay in selecting a new CM has drawn sharp reactions from AAP. Atishi, the former Delhi CM, continued her attacks, claiming that the BJP’s reluctance to appoint a Chief Minister shows a lack of faith in its own elected representatives. “PM Modi clearly does not trust any of the 48 BJP MLAs,” Atishi remarked, adding that the BJP’s hesitation reflects their failure to articulate a vision for governance.

CM Oath-Taking Ceremony Details

The long-awaited oath-taking ceremony of Delhi’s new Chief Minister will be a grand event, set to take place on February 20 at Ramlila Maidan. High-profile dignitaries, including PM Modi, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, and a host of prominent political, corporate, and entertainment figures, are expected to attend. Sources also indicated that 12,000 to 16,000 Delhi residents would be present to witness the ceremony.

AAP’s Frustration with BJP’s Delays

AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar expressed frustration over the BJP’s internal delays. She questioned, “Why should the people of Delhi suffer due to BJP’s internal conflict? If they are taking 10 days to announce a CM, how long will it take them to make decisions that actually benefit Delhi’s residents?”

As the suspense continues, the BJP will hold a crucial meeting on February 19, likely paving the way for the formal announcement of the next Delhi CM.
