India Considers F-35A Fighter Jet Amid AMCA Development: A Game Changer in South Asia?
The United States has extended an offer to India for its cutting-edge F-35A fighter jets. This proposal comes at a crucial time as India is actively developing its indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), which aims to equip the Indian Air Force (IAF) with state-of-the-art air superiority capabilities.
New Delhi: The United States has extended an offer to India for its cutting-edge F-35A fighter jets. This proposal comes at a crucial time as India is actively developing its indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), which aims to equip the Indian Air Force (IAF) with state-of-the-art air superiority capabilities.
Currently, only the US, Russia, and China operate fifth-generation stealth fighters. Meanwhile, Turkey is developing its own stealth jet, KAAN, and has proposed joint production with Pakistan. This development is concerning for India, as both its adversaries—China and Pakistan—could soon field advanced stealth aircraft. China already possesses two operational stealth fighters, the J-20 and J-35, and last year, Pakistan announced plans to purchase 40 J-35s from China.
Stealth Fighters in the Hands of India’s Rivals: A Strategic Concern
The presence of multiple stealth fighter platforms among its adversaries presents a significant challenge for India. However, acquiring the F-35A would substantially enhance India’s air power. The F-35A Lightning II is far superior in technology compared to China’s J-35 and Turkey’s KAAN. Once India successfully completes the AMCA project, the IAF will emerge as a formidable force, equipped with a combination of indigenous and imported stealth technologies.
Pakistan’s Fifth-Generation Fighter Jet Ambitions: A Financial Hurdle?
Pakistan has long sought fifth-generation fighter jets, but financial constraints remain a major hurdle. Developing and operating such advanced aircraft demands significant investment. Even India faces challenges in funding its AMCA program, despite a much larger economy. Given Pakistan’s ongoing economic crisis, the question remains: How will Islamabad finance its stealth fighter ambitions?
If Pakistan does manage to procure both the J-35A from China and the KAAN from Turkey, while India secures the F-35A and advances the AMCA, the balance of air power in South Asia will shift permanently. A combination of India’s F-35A, AMCA, and Rafale F4 jets would create a technologically superior air force, capable of countering China, Pakistan, and Turkey with ease.

F-35A: A Technological Leap for India
If India proceeds with the F-35A purchase, it would mark a historic shift in its military procurement strategy—India currently does not operate any American fighter jets. The F-35A is equipped with advanced stealth technology, sensor fusion, electronic warfare capabilities, and network-centric warfare systems, making it the most advanced fighter in the world.
The AN/APG-81 AESA radar and Distributed Aperture System (DAS) allow the F-35A to track and engage stealth aircraft like the J-35 and KAAN. If India adds this aircraft to its fleet, it could completely neutralize the stealth advantages of China’s and Pakistan’s fifth-generation jets.
Could Pakistan’s Stealth Jets Become Obsolete?
The biggest advantage of India acquiring the F-35A would be its ability to expose and counter enemy stealth aircraft. The J-35 and KAAN rely on stealth as their primary defense, but if India’s radar and sensor technology can detect them, these jets would be vulnerable in aerial combat.
Additionally, India could equip its stealth fighters with indigenous Astra Mk2 and Mk3 air-to-air missiles, and even future hypersonic missiles, making its air fleet one of the deadliest in the region.
If India acquires the F-35A before Pakistan, it will be the first South Asian country to operate fifth-generation fighter jets, rendering Pakistan’s stealth fighter plans ineffective. Pakistan has only announced its intention to buy the J-35, but it has yet to finalize the deal. Given that the cost of maintaining 40 stealth jets is astronomical, can Pakistan afford it? The country is already dependent on IMF loans for economic survival.
The Strategic Advantage for India
If India moves forward with purchasing the F-35A, Pakistan will face immense pressure to respond—even if it means taking on billions in additional debt. This scenario would favor India strategically. Furthermore, the AMCA program ensures that India continues to develop its indigenous stealth fighter capability, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers in the long run.
A combined fleet of F-35A, AMCA, and Rafale F4 would solidify India’s air dominance in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. With superior stealth, sensor fusion, and electronic warfare capabilities, India could maintain air superiority over China and Pakistan for decades to come.
